Virginia Garland was like a second grandma to my daughter growing up . Kimberly called her GaGa when she was little. My first wife and I bought the land my house is on from Mr and Mrs Garland. She was near and dear to us. She taught Kim how to play checkers. I used this cut Virginia’s grass for her and she and her husband Howard were the best neighbors and would babysit my daughter at night while Kim’s mom was going to work and I was on my way home. She now rests in the family cemetery with in sight of my and her homes. She had a long life and we miss her daily,

I met Virginia in the early 1990's during a visit in the Red Oak / Chase City area searching for family history. Her sister (Mary) was married to Nathaniel Bacon who was a distant cousin of my father. The history of the Bacon family shows Edmund C. (my great-grandfather) relocating to Arkansas (Tates Bluff) which is my heritage and homeplace. Mary shared her home with my mother and sister for several days and Virginia lived just down the road. The time spent with Virginia and Mary evoke so many memories. Seeing the photo of Virginia and her dog perfectly captures in one photo my memories of our shared love for our dogs!
