John Edward (Jack) Smith, Jr. passed away on January 21, 2018, in Clarksville, VA after a lengthy illness. He was born in Chase City, VA, the son of John Edward Smith and Nancy Dodd Smith, graduated from Bluestone High School, attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and graduated from the University of Richmond. He spent his entire professional career in the rural electrification program, starting as a loan analyst with the Rural Electrification Administration in Washington, DC. He became an operations field representative in North Carolina and then returned to Washington and joined the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) as a management consultant. He briefly owned his own consulting firm, Smith and Associates, and later served as assistant manager of Chugach Electric Cooperative in Anchorage, Alaska. He returned to Richmond, VA in 1984 and continued to do management consulting with the NRECA before moving to Clarksville, VA in 2001. During his years in Northern VA Jack was active in the Braddock Road Youth Club where he coached and refereed girls’ soccer. He was a lifetime Redskins fan, Hokie fan and avid golfer. He was always an ardent supporter of his hometown of Chase City, VA where he was a past board member of MacCallum More Museum and Gardens and the Mecklenburg Country Club. Jack was predeceased by his daughter, Judith Gregory Smith. He is survived by his wife, Anne Reynolds Smith, sons, John Edward Smith III of Jackson WY, Charles Reynolds Smith and wife, Katherine of Richmond, granddaughters, Anne Gregory Smith, Nora Hollins Smith, and Paige Reynolds Smith all of Richmond, brother, Dr. Anderson Dodd Smith and wife, Glenna of Atlanta GA, sister, Nancy Smith Owens and husband Ralph of Hedgesville WV, five nieces, and several great nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 27 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 338 4^th Street, Chase City, with a reception to follow at Shadow Lawn on Main Street.
