Dr. Jan Marie Carter, 62, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, died peacefully Sunday November 4, 2018 at The Medical Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky from metastatic breast cancer.  She was born January 17, 1956 in Farmville, Virginia to the late Dr. Wallace Randolph Carter and Neala Nordstrom Carter, of Chase City, Virginia.

She graduated from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia in 1978 where she received her Bachelor of Science in Biology.  She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Judicial Council, Omicron Delta Kappa and was a member of the first women’s basketball team.   In 1982, she earned her medical degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School.  She then joined the army and completed a pediatric internship and residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1985.  After completing a neonatology fellowship at Wilford Hall Medical Center, San Antonio, TX, she served on active duty at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX.  After her 10 year military career, she was a neonatologist at Cape Fear Neonatology PA in Fayetteville, North Carolina where she practiced medicine for 26 years. She served on the Board of Directors of the Sandhills Physicians, Inc.   She will be remembered by her colleagues, former patients and families as being a dedicated, compassionate physician who helped thousands of premature babies survive.  She was known for her kindness and generosity towards everyone.

She loved Randolph-Macon College and served on the Board of Trustees and was elected Vice Chair in 2017.  She created the Jan M. Carter M.D. Medical Internship Program.

She is survived by two children a son, Dr. Harry Lee Warren III, wife Lauren Warren and grandson Harry Lee Warren IV, of Roanoke, Va., daughter, Dr. Alyssa Marie Warren and Dr. Arthur Uyesugi of Richmond, Va., her brother Dr. Wallace Randy Carter and Denise, of Bowling Green, KY, niece Haley, Jacob and Briggs Cavanah of Glasgow, KY,  nephew Aaron Carter of Huntsville, AL.,  and multiple aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Thanks to her special friends who are many in number and were an important part of her life.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday November 10, 2018 at Wood Funeral Chapel in Chase City, Virginia.  The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.  Interment will follow at Woodland Mausoleum.
