Ruth Ellen Martin Smith, age 86, of Chase City, Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on June 30, 2024. She was born on June 24, 1938, in Halifax County. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Vernon F. Smith; her father, Leonard George Martin; and her mother, Etta King Martin. She was also preceded in death by her three sisters, Edna Smith Martin, Louise Womack, and Mildred Ann Hazlewood.
Ruth found great pleasure in working in her yard and tending to her flowers. She also loved spending time with her family.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, always putting her family’s needs before her own. Ruth was known for her kind heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering faith. She touched the lives of many with her generosity and love. She was never one to complain and was always happy-go-lucky, bringing joy to those around her.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Brenda Smith Stanton, and her husband Bobby; grandchildren, Brandy Stanton Denson and her husband Jon, and Ashley Stanton Bush and her husband Ben; and great-grandchildren, Jaxon Denson, Gracyn Denson, Cooper Bush, and Miller Bush. She is also survived by her sister, Lessie Crews Hazlewood, and her husband James, as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to her sister, Lessie, and several caregivers who have assisted in caring for Ruth throughout the years.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Wood Funeral Service Chapel, with a visitation beginning one hour before the service.

Ruth’s memory will forever be cherished by her family and friends. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
