Bernard Furman Chumney, age 88, of Lynchburg, passed away February 18, 2025. He earned
his Associate Degree in Police Science from Central Virginia Community College. He was a
retired Virginia State Trooper who attended the FBI Academy, an Army Veteran, and a member of The Staunton River Masonic Lodge #155 with over 50 years of service.
Bernard was also a successful entrepreneur with numerous business ventures. He was the son
of the late W.R. “Raleigh” and May Bell Walker Chumney. Bernard was also preceded in death
by a brother, W.R. “Sonny” Chumney; niece Mary Agnes Harrison; and nephews William James
Chumney and Marvin Duane Valencourt. Surviving is his wife, Ardella Valencourt Chumney;
daughter Valerie Ann Chumney; sister Florence Spaulding; brother Tommy Chumney (Linda);
nieces Carrie Gorsuch, Janice Lee Rice; nephews Thomas Chumney, Jr., Matthew Chumney,
Jonathan Chumney, Scott Alan Richardson, Andrew Clark Richardson, Steven Robbins
Valencourt; as well as numerous great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2025 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery and a reception will be held afterwards. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt.
