Ardella Marie Valencourt Chumney, age 86, of Lynchburg, passed away March 1, 2025. She
was born in Manistee County, MI, moved to North Carolina but then enjoyed living the majority
of her life in Virginia. She was a 1960 graduate of the Petersburg General Hospital School of
Nursing. She was married to the late Bernard Furman Chumney. After giving of herself to
others through her nursing career, she dedicated her life to her family and friends. Ardella is
survived by her daughter, Valerie Ann Chumney and many family members – niece Janice Lee
Rice; nephews Scott Alan Richardson (Cathy), Andrew Richardson (Diane), Steven Robbins
Valencourt, Thomas Chumney, Jr., Matthew Chumney, Jonathan Chumney; in-laws, Florence
Spaulding, Tommy Chumney (Linda); as well as numerous great nieces (including Kristen
Richardson, Caroline Richardson and Olivia Richardson) and nephews and close friends and
neighbors that provided love, friendship and support. She was preceded in death by her
parents, Marvin and Mary Valencourt; her sisters, Regena Hall (Grover), Alvina Valencourt, Iris
Richardson (“Stretch”) and Leona Valencourt; her brother Marvin “Bud” Valencourt; her
nephews, Michael D. Hall, Marvin Duane Valencourt and William James Chumney; in-laws,
W.R. “Raleigh” and May Bell Walker Chumney and W.R. “Sonny” Chumney. Funeral services
will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2025 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 73 Meherrin River Rd,
Chase City, Va. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow
