Mrs. Alphas G. Pollard, 94, of Chase City, died March 20, 2013. She was a social reporter with The News Progress with 47 years of service, a long time member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, honorary trustee of Prestwould Foundation, board member of the Fine Arts Museum of Southern Virginia, honorary member of the Fortnightly Club, emeritus board member of MacCallum More Gardens and Museum, and was named Chase City “Citizen of the Year” in 1988. She was the widow of Carl Edward Pollard and is survived by her son, Carl Edward Pollard, Jr. and wife Mary, of Alexandria, VA, daughter, Geraldine P. Sherman and husband Walter, of Fort Mill, SC, grandsons, C. Edward Pollard III of Leesburg, F. Laughton Sherman and wife Mary, of New York, NY, granddaughters, Susan Pollard Freimanis and husband Adam, of Alexandria, Portia Pollard Mackinnon and husband Mark, of Charlotte, NC, six great grandchildren. Services will be held 2:00 p..m. Wednesday, April 3 at St. John’s Episcopal Church with Father Paul Phillips officiating. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 338 4th. St., Chase City or MacCallum More Gardens, PO Box 104, Chase City, VA 23924.
