Elizabeth “Bettie” Campbell Snead Herbert, widow of Seldon Scott Herbert, passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Brandermill Healthcare Center in Midlothian. Bettie was born on July 5, 1931 in Richmond, VA to Ellis Pollard Snead and Annie Virginia Jones Snead. She lived at Carysbrook until age 7 when she moved to Fork Union. She graduated from Fluvanna High School in 1948 and Westhampton College, University of Richmond in 1952. Bettie and Scott were married in 1953. Bettie taught school before they moved to Boydton in 1955 to operate Herbert Drug Co. Bettie was appointed to the Boydton Town Council, becoming the first female member of the council. Bettie was a member of Boydton Baptist Church. She was founder of the Boydton Woman’s Club and the Cedar Crest Garden Club. She served on the Board of The Boyd Tavern Foundation (Secretary), The Prestwould Foundation (Secretary), and The Boydton Medical Center. Bettie retired from the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services. Bettie loved bridge, knitting, and reading. She enjoyed traveling and the daily crossword puzzle in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Bettie was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (former Regent) and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Bettie is survived by her children, Bettie Scott (“Bebe”) Herbert of Richmond; Thomas Pollard Herbert and wife Donna Suttle Herbert of Newport News, Virginia (“Ginny Boo”) Campbell Herbert of Clarksville, and Ellis (“Beaufa”) Snead Herbert Britton and husband William Todd Britton of Midlothian. Her grandchildren, Thomas Pollard Herbert, Jr., Raymond Scott Herbert, Campbell Crenshaw Carter, Kathryn Abigail Carter, and Elizabeth Louise Britton, also survive her. Graveside services will be held on July 2, 2015 at 1 o’clock, p.m. at the Boydton Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Lawrence J. Davis officiating. Immediately following the service there will be a Celebration at The Boyd Tavern.
