Gordon Douglas Long, husband of Betsy N. Long, passed away on Monday, May 31, 2016.
The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Douglas Long are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 4, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church,4255 SC-165, Yonges Island, SC 29449. The Rite of Committal will be at sunset, approximately 6:00 PM, on June 11, 2016 at Green Cove Farm, 1607 Newcomb’s Bridge Rd, Chase City, VA 23924. There will be a visitation and memorial service beginning at 3:00 PM.
Gordon was born in Shelbyville, Kentucky on July 5, 1945. He was the son of the late Carl Gilbert and Anna Gordon Long. He moved numerous times in his lifetime, but was a resident of Lunenburg County, Virginia for 38 years prior to moving to South Carolina in 2010. Gordon was an avid fisherman. He was also a grateful recovering alcoholic having been sober since 1989. He was very active in Alcoholics Anonymous and sponsored several alcoholics on their road to sobriety. He was a natural caregiver and helped to nurse numerous family members in their last days. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Yonges Island, South Carolina.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Betsy Newcomb Long of Hollywood, South Carolina, his daughter, Lillian Paige Long McCormick, son-in-law, Charles James (Chuck) McCormick, his three grandsons Kilbey Rutledge McCormick, William Spencer McCormick and James Gordon McCormick all of Charleston, South Carolina, his brothers Donald Leon Long of Denton, Texas and Carl Gilbert Long, Jr. of Charlotte Court House, Virginia and his almost daughter Melinda Lee Winn of Chase City, Virginia. He is also survived by his nephews and nieces, Carlton Gilbert Long of Arrington, Virginia, Tammy Lee Long of Charlotte Court House, Virginia, Carolyn Marie Long of Lynchburg, Virginia, Lori McGee Eggleston of Richmond, Virginia, Melissa McGee Drewry of Richmond, Virginia, Isaac Long Kirkland of Grand Prairie, Texas and Jacob Ryan Long of Denton, Texas and seven great nieces and nephews.
