Neala Nordstrom Carter, 88, of Chase City, Virginia, died Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at The Medical Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky, after a six-month treatment for hepatobiliary carcinoma. She was born December 22, 1928, in Washington, D.C., to the late Col. Arthur Hugo Nordstrom and Gertrude Hunter Nordstrom. She graduated from the prestigious Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., in 1946. She attended George Washington University, where she was captain of the women’s basketball team and a member of Zeta Zeta Zeta Sorority. In 1950, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia. At Virginia Tech, she met the love of her life, Dr. Wallace R. Carter. They married September 6, 1950, and spent 48 years together before his death in 1998. She was an avid traveler, and particularly loved the beach, but her true passion was her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Dr. Wallace R. Carter. Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Jan Marie Carter, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and her son, Dr. Wallace Randy Carter, and daughter-in-law, Denise Carter, of Bowling Green, Kentucky. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Dr. Harry Lee Warren III and wife Lauren of Roanoke, Virginia, Dr. Alyssa Marie Warren of Richmond, Virginia, Haley Carter Cavanah, BSN, and husband Jacob of Glasgow, KY, Aaron Randolph Carter of Huntsville, AL., and two great-grandchildren, Harry Lee Warren IV and Briggs Martin Cavanah. She is also survived by her brother, Arthur H. Nordstrom, Jr. and wife Jane of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and nephews Mike Nordstrom and wife Debbie, Mark Nordstrom and wife Bonnie, and niece Angela Rivas and husband Tim; sister-in-law, Winona Buchanan and husband Bill of Cary, North Carolina and niece Victoria Mosley, her husband David, and children Logan and Christian; sister-in-law Bertha Carter and family of Charlotte Court House, Virginia; and sister-in-law Ann Carter and family of Christiansburg, Virginia. In addition, she is survived by special friends Cary and Frances Joines, Johnny and Audrey Murdock, Randolph and Margaret Flynn, Tom and Vickie Poston, Elaine Muir, and Barbara Burnside. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 24, 2017, at Wood Funeral Chapel in Chase City, Virginia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
